A while a go I had the pleasure of working with the cracking folk at A Productions , illustrating a couple of the picture books for the CBeebies' show, Driver Dan's Story Train. These are a a few images from the episode "Sweetie's Garden" which was aired last Friday. Inkygoodness's Lisa Hassell has written a great article interviewing some of my favourite artists such as Ben Newman and Lesley Barnes about how they create their top notch digital handmade illustrations. There's lots of great tips and inspiration for digital doodling, and I have also contributed a wee bit of my own (dubious) wisdom. Plenty stuff a-happening in the very near future. Very excited to announce that the Inkygoodness Totem show will be coming to Birmingham next week!

It will be the same totem show that featured at this year's pictoplasma last April, with lots of totemy themed additions from a corking line up of doodling folk who you can find everything out about on their blog. It will be taking place at the brand spanking new Zellig space at the Custard Factory. The evening of the 21st will also see the launch of the new issue of Ammo magazine, live music, and live drawing. Definitely worth a visit- its going to be bosting.

I will also be joining my tiniest friend Lainey Tang at the Secret Garden Vintage Fair at the Lord Clifdon in Brum this weekend. I met Lainey blooming ages ago back when we were enthusiastic foundation students at Bournville. Lainey went on to study Graphics at Falmouth and has since been freelancing and selling her customised cards and stationary. She's been keeping a blog about all things illustrative.

So if you're in the area bring yourselves and your penny pods and say hello!

Last night was the private view of the Girls Who Draw magic show, which was a super night of free wine, crisps and magical pictodoodles!

To coincide with the opening of the girls who draw magic show exhibiton, the gwd have made a new magical themed colouring book zine. Featuring the work of Beth Morrison, Gemma Correll, Helen Entwisle, Karoline Rerrie, Mary Kilvert, Mina Braun, Ruth Green, Sarah Lippett, Sarah Ray, and myself. ...And here he is, hanging out in my parents conservatory (very cool, I know...) A few finishing touches and bits of tidying up later he was wizzed off in the mini ready to get packed up with the other Totems, which I believe now have been painstakingly individually bubble wrapped by Michelle and friends for their final leg to Berlin. Looking forward to seeing how the exhibition comes together!

Girls Who Draw invite you to their Magic Show at Solihull Gallery
4th April - 11th June 2011

The Girls Who Draw will be putting on a Magic Show Exhibition this spring, including Ruth Green, Sarah Ray, Karoline Rerrie, Jane Anderson, Helen Entwisle, Mary Kilvert, Sarah Lippett, Daisy Whitehouse, Beth Morrison and Mina Braun, and myself. It has been a good opportunity for us all to do something a bit different from just good old doodling, so expect to see lots of new work from prints to wood to a bit of sewing.
Throughout the Magic Show there will be opportunities to meet and work with some of the different illustrators involved in the exhibition. There will be drop-in activities, printing demonstrations and magic themed children’s workshops.

Magic Show Private View in the G1 Gallery Thursday 7th April 6.15pm – 7.30pm. Hopefully see you there if you're about in the Midlands!

Last Saturday I went along to the Inkygoodness Totem live drawing event at the Tobacco factory to get started on my totem pole for the character walk exhibition. Definitely go and have a gander at the Inkygoodness site (and facebook page) for more photos of the other Totems. There was some bosting work happening all over the shop, including the likes of Hannah Baber, Tim Miness, and Seb Burnett (who works like the wind..)

Thanks to the inky folk for the photos. I shall post some more soon of the finished piece (I can't go sending him to Berlin with no trousers!)

Lots of manic colouring in at the moment, which I will hopefully be able to show you some of very soon. For now though here is a little silly doodle I did for the dreamboats show before christmas. Mark Lamarr, Jarred Christmas, Daniel Dreiberg, whoever else! These birds can't help but swoon for these savvily spectacled hipsters. Oh my!

Inkygoodness at Pictoplasma!

Hallo and a very belated happy new year to you! Lots of exciting things coming up starting with the great Inkygoodness news!

It will be the group's first international exhibition. Work for "Character Totem" will be starting this weekend at Vibe bar in Shoreditch, where artists such as Mr Millerchip, Steven Silverwood, and McBess will be drawing live onto lovingly crafted totem poles (crikey!).

If can't make it to the London event, then you can catch the live drawing action at either the Tabacco Factory (Bristol- where I'll be, 5th March) or Cord (Manchester, 12th March). All the resulting works will be exhibited as part of the Pictoplasma character walk in Berlin this April.

A little quiet on the posting front again due to a very busy few weeks doodling. But here is a little note of what is happening over the next few weeks:

As if yesterday a few of us Birmingham based girls who draw have a wee exhibition at Solihull Arts Complex cafe. So if you are passing make sure to grab a bit of tea, cake, and doodle gandering.

On Sunday 23rd November, myself and Karoline Rerrie will be running a little GWD stall at the Bust Christmas Craftacular in Bethnal Green. The event is sure to involve much craft and merry making. A list of vendors and goings on can be found here. I'm particularly looking forward to having a snoop at fine city friends and Sarah Kerry's mightily super giant knitted biscuits.

...And finally a chrimbo party and exhibition thrown by the lovely chaps that are inkygoodness and dreamboat records. Head down to Start the Bus in Bristol as of the 10th December. A festive treat for your peepers and king lears!

Today I received a brilliant parcel from moncho ediciones Marina Haller!

First off I was given this beautiful screen printed concertina book "Amigas Que Engordan", which is a great little story about two best chums who enjoy accompanying all their day to day activities with eating good food. My favourite has to be the aerobics with a cone of chips (these girls aren't daft!) Marina's illustrations are brilliant.

This came packaged with a lovely set of screen printed recipe cards. Awesome!

Next up, Marina and her new husband were kind enough to send me some copies of their wedding invite (which I had designed the cats image for). I absolutely love the type they've designed, and the printing is incredible! Definitely inspired me to get practicing :-)

...And if all that wasn't enough I also got this great printed wooden box full of sweets!

Happy Wednesday evening chums! The brand spanking new girls who draw postcard book is hot off the press, and this time to the tune of "Magic" (a bit like Mick Smiley's saucy hit, which you may remember from the first Ghostbusters film...)

screen printing and first attempted giveaway

Yesterday I had a splendid day at Birmingham Print Makers learning lots of new things from screen printing wiz Karoline Rerrie. The result was my first ever crop of screen prints in the form of this dapper bird (a not so distant relative of wheeley bird, possibly?) Hopefully it is the first of many (less wobbly) prints to come in the future. Many thanks to Karoline for all my patience and clumsyness!

A big thanks to everyone how came to the inkygoodness private view on Thursday night- it was bosting!

Above are the works I was exhibiting: dot-to-dot, totem, (and my debut in wood work) wheeley bird! It was a really refreshing change to make something in 3d, and something that if I have the time I would definitely like to do more of. Inset wheels, axels and wood filler add a bit more variety to the usual CMD C/CMD V.

The night also saw the launch of the current issue of Ammo Magazine, with a cover illustrated by the super aaron miller . I'm sure they wont mind me directing you to their flickr account of the evening. Enjoy!

inkygoodness 4 week!

Just to let you all know that this Thursday evening will see the opening of the fourth Inkygoodness show at the EAST gallery :-)

There will be lots of doodles, prints and other creative curiosities around the theme of play. For more information on the artists involved you can visit the inkygoodness website.

A while back i did a couple of illustrations for the new German magazine Kolk . It is full of lovely hand made images, which made a nice change from my usual digital tinkering. A while back I was very kindly asked by the people at Moncho Ediciones to contribute a cat for their new book 'mish mish mish'. The book is a limited edition screen printed collection of cats from illustrators from all over the world. Elwood (pictured above) and myself are chuffed to have been involved :-)

Girls Who Draw invite you to come and visit their amazing 'Travelling Menagerie' which will be at the Here and Now Gallery in Falmouth throughout July. The exhibition will feature an exotic array of artwork from the 'Menagerie' postcard book as well as new work based on the same theme. the highly organised super girls who are inkygoodness have organised the fourth exhibition extravaganza, this time in London. there's a great bunch of illustrators and creative do-ers taking part, including some of my faves dave bain, george mitchell, and monsieur millerchip, so make sure to visit if you're about in september!

all has been very busy this end updating my children's work and starting a new portfolio for the paper & cloth studio, so will post up some new bits and bobs soonish.

I recently designed an image for the packaging of Red Stone Design's christmas present. This year Red Stone have been supporting the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, a national charity dedicated to championing bumblebees through conservation and educations. As well as their donation to the trust, they sent each client a packaged hand cut honeycomb, c/o the busy bees of Shropshire.

I will be displaying my work in my hometown of Bromsgrove during the festive season. The exhibition will run from the 02/11/09 to 03/01/10 at the Artrix. The Artrix is a smashing space and a great treat for Bromsgrove. Funnily enough art director Andy Woods founded the cinema at the Falmouth Arts Centre, which was one of my all time favourite activities while I was studying there, along with pints of Betty Stoggs. 3 weeks to go- better get doodling!!

Okido 10

Issue 10 of Okido magazine is now out, and it's all about emotions and feelings. I illustrated a short story about wolves, adapted from an old cherokee tale. The magazine was launched this weekend at Battersea's Doodle Bar, where there was an abundance of doodling, music, cake and burts crisps. A big thankyou to the Okido team for such a tip top evening!

Also, if you happen to be in the Worcester area it's well worth checking out the cosy 'task in hand' shop in the hop market. All things arty are overseen by Richard Clarke, who as well as being a shop keeper is a tip top illustrator (www.richardtclarke.co.uk). Richard was very kind to stock some of our menagerie postcard books, and sounds like he and the rest of the task in hand chaps have alot of exciting future projects in the works. keep an eye open at www.thetaskinhand.co.uk!

The second Girls Who Draw postcard book is complete! The book contains 24 lovely postcards on the theme of menagerie by 11 illustrators: Sarah Ray, Gemma Correll, Mary Kilvert, Yee Ting Kuit, Anke Weckmann, Current State, Michelle Turton, Karoline Rerrie, Amy Timms, Ruth Green, and myself. Its been a great little project, and a splendid to work with these tip top folk. A big cheer to Karoline for organising it all!

As from this week you can now buy flowers from ycn's rivington street gallery. They asked lots of illustrators to design wrapping paper for flowers to be sent to art directors and other creative folk, to help promote their agency. I went down a collagey-road, and you can see the finished article dead tiny in the middle there! All the paper designs are up in the library/gallery space so go have a gander!

All has been well, despite being a little light on the blogs. The past month I have been mainly drawing animals animals animals, for various different projects, and some bits and bobs to do with saxon poetry. Will hopefully get some images up shortly.

Yesterday I visited YCN to do some doodling for a new project. While I was there I met illustrators Toby Pennington and Valero Doval, who were very much busy beavering away to the tune of moustaches and mushrooms. It was my first visit to Rivington Street, and I definitely recommend to anyone London way to go have a snoop through their library!

Nikalas Catlow included some of my sketchbook doodles on his blog today, which was very nice of him. It's a really great blog for children's book design. Nikalas is currently featuring different illustrator's sketchbooks every Monday, and his Retro fest features are full of brilliant resources to inspire, borrow, and pinch.

this past months seems to have disappeared very quickly.. eep! I've been spending most of my time in my sketchbook, beavering away trying to come up with some new bright ideas, so now going through with a pad of tracing paper trying to extract anything that could be something.
If been volunteering in a school for the past three weeks, which has been a good op to try and expand on my kid-drawning skills. hopefully be uploading some of this muchos soon.
